Become an Approved Driving Instructor with the ADI Part One Test

The ADI Part One Test is a critical step in becoming a qualified driving instructor. As the first of three tests required to become an ADI, it assesses your knowledge of road procedure, driving laws and skills, traffic signs, and more. To take the test, you must have been accepted into the qualifying process by the DVSA and have completed a DBS check.

Format of the ADI Part One Test

The ADI Part One Test consists of both a multiple-choice and a hazard perception component. The multiple-choice portion is 1 hour and 45 minutes long and includes 100 questions divided into four categories: road procedure, driving test and disabilities, driving skills and the law, and instructional techniques. The hazard perception test features 14 video clips that assess your ability to react to various driving scenarios.

Requirements for the ADI Part One Test

To take the ADI Part One Test, you must bring a valid driving license or passport as photo ID. If you have reading difficulties, you may submit proof from a teacher, education professional, doctor, or medical professional to request extra time for the test.

Passing the ADI Part One Test

If you pass the ADI Part One Test, you will receive a pass certificate letter. You have two years from the date of passing to complete the remaining steps to become a fully-qualified ADI. If you do not pass the test, you may retake it an unlimited number of times.

ADI part 2

The ADI Part Three test is the final stage of becoming a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) in the UK. In this test, you will be evaluated on your teaching skills and abilities.
It will include a demonstration of your teaching methods and techniques, as well as a role play scenario with a student. The test is conducted by a DVSA Examiner, who will assess your ability to effectively communicate and instruct a student driver.
To take the ADI Part Three test, you must have already passed the ADI Part One and Two tests. You should also have completed a minimum of 40 hours of approved instruction and be on the Register of Approved Driving Instructors.
If you pass the ADI Part Three test, you will receive a certificate of eligibility, allowing you to begin working as a fully qualified ADI. There is no limit to the number of times you can take the test, but there is a time limit of 2 years from passing the ADI Part Two test to pass the ADI Part Three test.
Preparing for the test and obtaining the right materials can greatly increase your chances of success. Utilize resources such as the Official ADI Handbook and training courses provided by recognized driving schools. With practice, patience and determination, you can become a skilled and confident driving instructor.
